 Dakota Blue Richards was born 11 April 1994. She is an English actress. At 13 years old she made her film debut in The Golden Compass as Lyra Belacqua the protagonist. Other roles in the lead role include the unruly teenager April in Dustbin Baby and Maria in the 2009 film The Secret of Moonacre. She played Franky Fitzgerald, a third-generation actor in the British teen drama Skins in 2011. She has also played roles in television, film and on stage.Richards was born in the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in the Fulham Road, London. The family relocated to Sussex, where she attended Newlands School. She was a student at St Paul's Primary School in Brighton and later Blatchington Mill School in Hove and KBis Theatre School in Brighton.After watching the stage adaptation of His Dark Materials at the National Theatre, she says she "just wanted to be Lyra". The audition process included more than a thousand candidates. Philip Pullman (author of the books) stated, "As soon as I saw Dakota's screen test, I realised that the search was over." Chris Weitz, director, said Richards had made what should be a tough decision, quite simple.
